My fur baby coco

We adopted our precious fur baby from a shelter, I named her Coco Maria Oldham. Coco because of her color. Her birthday is on our wedding anniversary, April 6th. She will be four years old this year. She is mostly pit bull, with a little bit of lab mixed in. A lot of people are afraid of pit bulls, and think pit bulls are mean dogs. Believe me, that is not true of Coco. She is just a big baby, fifty pounds of baby. She is afraid of thunder, lightening, rain, sirens, and fire crackers. She will start shaking, whining, and hiding, if she hears any of those things. Her vet actually prescribed xnax for her, poor baby. I love her beyond measure, would be totally lost without her. She is definitely my faithful, loyal companion. I call her my nurse. Whenever I am not feeling well, which is quite often, she does not leave my side. If I am in bed, she lays right by my side. She will not leave, unless I get up, then she follows me, room, to room. When I take a bath, or shower, she lays beside the bathtub, until I am finished. When I am in the living room sitting in my recliner, she lays right beside me. When I get ready to get out of my recliner, because of my legs and feet, I cannot get up by myself. I will look at her, and say, Coco, help momma get up. She will jump down, get in front of my recliner, stand up with her paws on the foot rest, and push it down. Then, she waits for me to get up. She leads me to the bathroom. At night, when I am ready for bed, I look at her and say, you want to go to bed? Her ears perk up, and she keeps turning her head from side to side. Then, I say, take me to bed, take momma to bed. She gets down, and leads me to bed. If I am in another room, and need my husband, I look at her, and say go get pappa. She runs to whatever room he is in, and starts barking, and he comes to see what I need. Of course, she is also my play buddy. We play fetch with her toys, wrestle all over the place, and she loves to dance, and likes for me to sing to her. my Coco is one in a million.

  2. I have a pitbull. I thought it was a little black lab mix. I got her as a puppy and she had a fractured leg. Long story short, she is a wonderful, gentle, intelligent dog. I would never get another pitbull. People are too reactive of them. Plus, I'm 60. I don't like the idea of loving something that may be abandoned or destroyed if I kick the bucket. Morbid I know. Anyway, now I enjoy my sweet Louise. Your Coco looks like a lovebug.

  3. She seems like a sweetheart. I have to admit, I am afraid of pit bulls, but then I'm afraid of a lot of other dogs too. When we had our corgi, for some reason he was always being attacked by other dogs (four attacks over the years). Walking by other dogs would always scare me and the breeds like pit bulls and German shepherds, boxers, etc., would frighten me. Of course having been attacked by two dogs that their owners said "oh they are perfectly friendly" only to have them start attacking our little guy probably helped me develop a bit of posttraumatic stress about the whole thing. Glad your Coco is a great family member!

  4. What a precious mother's helper! Pit bulls are the original nanny dogs, given charge of protecting the family, especially the children.

  8. I love a good love story. We do rescues and our Charlie is one of them. He's not as smart as Cocoa. But he tries and that's what matters. She is beautiful.

  10. What a sweet baby. :)

I think that some dog breeds just get a bad reputation that is totally unfounded. I think the ones that are mean are that way because they were trained to be that way or they were mistreated and are reacting to that bad treatment.

We had a dog named Shep for about 15 years. She was a German Shepherd - Chow mix. Both breeds have bad reputations, but Shep was a gentle, loving dog. However, if someone messed with our kids, she'd stand up for our kids. She was a bit snippy when she was pregnant, but so long as no one touched her then, they'd be okay. We would warn them off, but some people have to learn the hard way. Nothing quite like doggy teeth to get the message across that they should have listened.

When our first son was born, we had a mutt named Gus. Gus nearly died as a baby and the vet said that he'd never get over 20 pounds. He ended up about 60 pounds of love. One day, the yard guy had a heart attack as he was driving to our yard and drove through the fence right at the nursery window. Gus nearly ripped off the side of the house trying to get in to check on our son. He was very protective.

Dogs are great! I love the photo of Coco giving you kisses. That is sweet. :)
