D is for Diabetes

Did you know these 10 facts about diabetes?

  1. About one third of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease.
  2. Type 2 diabetes often does not have any symptoms.
  3. Only about five percent of all people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

  5. A meal plan for a person with diabetes isn’t very different than that which is recommended for people without diabetes.
  6. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults.
  7. People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop heart disease than someone without diabetes.
  8. Good control of diabetes significantly reduces the risk of developing complications and prevents complications from getting worse.
  9. Bariatric surgery can reduce the symptoms of diabetes in obese people.
  10. Diabetes costs $174 billion annually, including $116 billion in direct medical expenses.

  2. Wow! Thanks for the cold hard facts. We get tested twice a year for everything and no diabetes. But we eat well and exercise for the most part.

    I’m exploring different types of dreams and their meanings.

  5. Yes, I do know these. I am pre- diabetic. Caught it a few years ago and 99% of the time, I can keep it down on my own. I count carbs and sugars. Forget the calories, they don't matter. I test every day. Certain things will spike it for me. Infection and constipation are the big ones. Cold medicine- full of sugar.

  6. These are important facts and worth sharing. I also know that strenuous activity can reduce the need for medication for people that are diabetic. I think your flowers are very beautiful but they do make reading your post difficult at times.

  7. One of my children has type II diabetes. It was discovered when he had been an adult for a while. It has been very difficult to find the right combination and dosages of medication for him. It does seem like he finally (after about 20 years) has a handle on it.

  8. With it taking longer for a diabetic to heal than for most healthy people, I wonder what the recovery time from bariatric surgery would be? It just seems like the longer healing time could open one up for more problems, like increasing risk of infection.

    David has a lot of complications of his Type 1 diabetes. His very first complication was going into a coma when he was 14 years old at the onset of diabetes. They didn't think he'd make it through the night. Most of the complications have involved his feet. He has diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy. Thankfully he hasn't been diagnosed with any heart disease, though his heart is enlarged. It was enlarged before the rest of him was. Both of us need to lose weight, that's for sure.

    You're in our prayers for complete healing and restoration. {{{Hugs}}}
